The AWARE award

The AWARE award is the only prize dedicated to female artists in France. AWARE was created to help offset the gross under-representation of women among artists celebrated by the diverse prizes and awards punctuating the artworld calendar. Targeting gender parity in the awarding of prizes, certain institutions have chosen to promote the work of female artists by instituting their own dedicated awards, such as the Max Mara Art Prize for Women in the UK and the Gabriele Münter Preis in Germany.

Since 2017 and with the support of the French Ministry of Culture, AWARE has yearly paid tribute to both a confirmed creator and an emerging artist, with the goal of spotlighting their creations. This year, the Cnap joins forces with the association to support female artists.

The honoured emerging artist will benefit from the acquisition of a work by the Cnap, as well as from production assistance in organizing a monographic exhibition within the D.C.A network (French association for the development of contemporary art centres) and/or Platform (network of FRAC regional contemporary art collections).

The awards ceremony will be held in early March 2019 at the Ministry of Culture.

The jury comprises seven leading figures from the world of culture: Alfred Pacquement (Honorary General Curator of Heritage, former Director of the Musée National d'Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou), President of the Jury, Manuel Borja-Villel (Director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid), Marie Cozette (Director of the CRAC Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée, Sète), Fanny Gonella (Director of the 49 Nord 6 Est – Frac Lorraine, Metz), Camille Morineau (Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Monnaie de Paris, co-founder and President of AWARE), Catherine Petitgas (art collector and historian) and Yves Robert (Director of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques – Cnap).
