MY EYES KEEP ME IN TROUBLE

MY EYES KEEP ME IN TROUBLE rassemble les œuvres de plus ou moins 20 artistes internationaux. Elle est composée d’installations in situ, de peintures murales, d’objets, de peintures et de vidéos. En honneur du pays invitant, l’exposition est adaptée à chaque lieu et inclut – aux côtés d’artistes d’autres pays – une large sélection d’artistes nationaux. MY EYES KEEP ME IN TROUBLE est le titre d’une chanson du bluesman R.L. Burnside. Ce titre à première vue innocent, résume bien le dialogue entre bon nombre d’artistes dont la pratique est centrée autour de l’idée de l’art non représentatif, réductif ou concret. Les écrits de Josef Albers («ouvrir les yeux» ou «l’œil pense») viennent immédiatement à l’esprit lorsque l’on parle d’art réductif. Ces idées, profondément ancrées dans l’histoire de l’art non représentatif, et leur influence sur les artistes contemporains, les passages vers d’autres mouvements artistiques et même la résurgence de l’idée de «concret», sont les données de ce projet d’exposition. L’exposition peut être perçue comme une compilation, une collection d’informations, contenus et contextes ayant un rapport à la pratique artistique contemporaine dans le domaine de l’art réductif. Le message sous-jacent de MY EYES KEEP ME IN TROUBLE remet en jeu la notion de «phénoménologie», qui part de l’expérience intuitive et personnelle pour atteindre la Raison (cf Husserl). Plus simplement, la phénoménologie donne la part belle au regard, à l’expérience et au ressenti, à partir desquels nous créons une pensée englobante et ontologique, qui redéfinit peut être la relation entre le spectateur et le créateur. Les œuvres ne doivent pas être vues comme les accessoires d’une idée d’exposition. Elles parlent pour elles-mêmes en tant qu’œuvres individuelles ou étapes dans le voyage visuel offert, provoquant et encourageant la vision. Il n’y aura pas d’explication ni de discours théorique au sujet du contenu de l’exposition. Le spectateur pénétrant l’espace recevra l’opportunité de «voir», d’explorer les différentes œuvres, leur poésie et leur langage, leur espace social et leur spécificité. It consists in site-specific installations, murals, objects, paintings and videos. To honor the host country, the exhibition is adapted to each venue and includes, together with artists of other countries, a large selection of national artists. MY EYES KEEP ME IN TROUBLE is the title of a song by bluesman R. L. Burnside. This seemingly innocent title, sums up well the dialogue between the different positions and concerns of a number of artists whose practice revolves around the idea of non representational, reductive or concrete art. Texts by Josef Albers ('open the eyes' or 'the eye is thinking') immediately come to mind when one talks about reductive art. These ideas, deeply grounded in the history of non-representational art, and their ongoing influence on artists today, the crossovers with other art movements and even the resurgence of the idea of the 'concrete' are the givens for this exhibition project. This exhibition can be perceived as a compilation, a gathering of information, content and context relating to today’s artistic practice in the realm of reductive art. The underlying message of MY EYES KEEP ME IN TROUBLE questions the notion of Phenomenology, which starts from intuitive and personal experience to reach Reason (see Husserl). More simply, phenomenology favors sight, experience and feeling, from which we create an encompassing and ontological thought, which may redefine the relationship between the viewer and the creator. The artworks themselves are not to be seen as props underlining a curatorial idea or as commodities launching a new fashion. They speak for themselves as individual artworks or as staging posts in the visual journey on offer, triggering and encouraging the actual act of seeing. There will be no explanation or theoretical discourse on the content of the exhibition. The viewer entering the space will be given the opportunity to ’see', to explore the different artworks, their poetry and language, their social space and specificity.
