Photography and Video Commission 2013

The advisory commission of the Centre national des arts plastiques responsible for artwork acquisition (painting, sculpture, graphic arts) met 12 November 2013. The committee had a budget of €360,000 and acquired 48 artworks from 19 artists, including eight who appear in the collection for the first time.

The acquisition policy is especially attentive to reflecting the current diversity and wealth of forms explored by artists working with images as their media. Exploring a wide range of artistic and cognitive strategies, these artists participate in writing an ongoing counter-history. Among them, some are developing means of inquiry through a documentary style: we can cite especially Clément Cogitore, Pierre Faure, Joachim Koester and Allan Sekula. Others use montage, narration or staging to explore collective memory: Basma Alsharif, Ismaïl Bahri, Taysir Batniji. Putting images in relation to reality has also been explored in terms of how individual histories, the social realm and current events link together, with: Clarisse Hahn, Florence Lazar, Simohammed Fettaka, Latoya Ruby Frazier, Mikael Levin, Mathieu Pernot, Akram Zaatari. The human body as a way to drive emancipation has also been especially developed by Frédéric Nauczyciel and Jhafis Quintero.

The commission also continues to complete one of the strongest orientations in the collection: the archive and new iconographers, with Dennis Adams, Erica Baum and Luciano Rigolini.
